In 1937, I.B. "Buster" Goodman established the business in Cincinnati, Ohio — though he was no stranger to the industry. His father, Jacob Goodman, had already built successful jewelry manufacturing and retail companies under the Goodman Jewelers name in Indianapolis, Indiana. Buster brought that legacy forward, carving out a niche by creating emblematic rings for fraternal organizations such as the Masonic Order — a specialty that would define the brand's early identity and build its sterling reputation across the country.
By the 1960s, the company had earned recognition as a leader in the men's jewelry market, with Buster growing the business through close relationships with the founders of great U.S. retail institutions including Zale, Kay's, and Gordon's. As a tribute to his vision, I.B. Goodman incorporated Buster's distinguished silhouette directly into its logo — a symbol of the founding spirit that still guides the company today.
When Goodman passed away in 1976, his daughters Babette Goodman Cohen and Jane Goodman Baum inherited the business and decided to run it themselves, with elder sister Babette taking the helm. Under her leadership, I.B. Goodman did far more than maintain its legacy — it expanded and innovated in remarkable ways. Babette became a trailblazer in the industry, becoming the first woman elected Chairman of the Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America (MJSA) in its nearly 100-year history, as well as the first woman admitted to the New York Diamond Dealers Club and the prestigious 24 Karat Club of New York — organizations that had been exclusively men's domains for over a century.
Today, the family-owned company is headed by Jonathan Goodman Cohen, the fourth generation of the Goodman family in the business. I.B.
